Reporting a wrong result

This is the most useful kind of message to receive and the hardest to act on without detail. A report that a number is wrong, on its own, gives nothing to investigate. Five things usually make the cause findable the same day:

  • Which tool. Pasting the page URL is the surest way
  • Every input you used. All of them, including the options you left at their defaults. Changing one can change the result
  • The figure shown and the figure you expected. The gap between the two is often enough to identify the cause on its own
  • Where your expected figure comes from. Another calculator, a published table, a document you were given. This separates a difference in assumptions from a genuine error
  • Your browser and device, to rule out a display problem

Reporting a bug

Because nothing you enter leaves your browser, there is no server-side error log to look at. A report that something failed at a particular time cannot be traced from this end.

Please describe the steps instead: which page you opened, what you entered, which button you pressed, and what happened or failed to happen. If an error message appeared on screen, copying its exact wording helps a great deal.

For a problem with a file, there is no need to send the file, and the form cannot accept one. Its format, rough size or page count, and the device that produced it are usually enough. Problems that only occur with a particular format or size are common.

Replies

This is a one-person site, so a reply cannot be promised. When one is sent it is usually within a week, longer if the question takes research.

Corrections and bug reports are read and acted on whether or not a reply goes out. If a fix ships, the page's updated date changes, which is one way to check that a report landed.

Messages that generally will not get a reply: requests for advice on your own tax or legal situation, sales and advertising enquiries, anything unrelated to the site, and messages with no usable reply address.

How messages are handled is described in theprivacy policy; who runs the site is on the about page.
